Education on territory according to the development stage of children

It is crucial that the children who will be forging the future of Japan have correct understanding of our territory. In elementary through Secondary School education in Japan, students receive education on territory based on the Courses of Study, Japan’s official school curriculum with consideration for their development stage.
In January 2014, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (hereafter MEXT) made necessary revisions of part of Teaching Guide for the Courses of Study: Lower Secondary School social studies; Upper Secondary School geography and history, and civics.
Teaching Guide for the Courses of Study are guidebooks prepared by MEXT, giving detailed interpretations of expressions and the meanings of the Courses of Study, which are general standards.

(Contents of the textbooks)
As of 2015,

  • All textbooks of Elementary School social studies contain explanations on the Northern Territories, Takeshima and the Senkaku Islands.
  • All textbooks of Lower Secondary School social studies (geography) contain explanations on the Northern Territories and Takeshima.
  • All textbooks of Upper Secondary School geography contain explanations on the Northern Territories, Takeshima and the Senkaku Islands.

In addition, from April 2016, All textbooks of Lower Secondary School social studies (geography, history and civics) will contain explanations on the Northern Territories, Takeshima and the Senkaku Islands.

MEXT will continue to take various measures to enhance education on territory at school, while cooperating with other governmental departments.
