In accordance with the international law and domestic laws, Japan Coast Guard firmly and calmly responds to foreign government vessels and vessels of activists, etc. who make a claim about territorial rights from their own perspective.
Also we undertake the safety of fishing boats of Japan.

Territorial seas of Japan
Every State has the right to establish the breadth of its territorial seas up to a limit not exceeding 12 nautical miles(about 22km), measured from baselines.
The sovereignty of a coastal States extends to the territorial seas, and domestic laws of the coastal state are applicable, but foreign vessels of all States enjoy the right of innocent passage through the territorial seas.※
※Meaning of innocent passage : Passage is innocent so long as it is not prejudicial to the peace, good order or security of the coastal State. Such passage shall take place in conformity with the UNCLOS and with other rules of international law.
