Content | This is a survey report on the Yaeyama Islands (agriculture, forestry, fisheries, mining, etc.) compiled by the Yaeyama Islands Public Office at the request of Hara Hiroshi, an Assistant Engineer in the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. In the section on "Fisheries", the report states that the prices of green turban snails, pearl oysters and other shellfish were being inflated at the time, and numbers were declining as a result of overfishing. For that reason, it states that in recent years fishermen "have often boldly attempted adventurous journeys in dugout canoes or strip-plank boats to distant uninhabited islands like Akon-Kubashima (approximately 93 nautical miles northwest of this island)." Here, "Akon-Kubashima" is thought to refer to the Senkaku Islands, and "this island" to Ishigaki Island. |
