Ryukyu Yaeyama Islands Survey Appendix

This spring, Noda Tadashi and Yamakuma Nobuo, accompanied by one fisherman, went to the islands of the Sakishima Islands to carry out exploration. Finally, they decided to engage in fishery operations around the Senkaku Islands, uninhabited islands lying between Yaeyama Islands and Taiwan.

In the first place, the Senkaku Islands lie 93 nautical miles over sea to the north-northwest of Ishigaki Island in the Yaeyama Islands, and 101 nautical miles from Taiwan. There are four islands in all, with freshwater and timber available. Shark, bonito, whale and yakogai (green turban snail) sea snails are most numerous, but other marine species are also by no means small in quantity.

Content The "Group Established with the Purpose of Starting Fishery Operations on Uninhabited Islands" recorded in this document refers to the Senkaku Islands Fishery Plan by a group of fishermen led by Noda Tadashi, a Shizoku of Kumamoto Prefecture, as mentioned in Exploration of Southern Islands. The reason given for the fishery expedition to the islands is that "This spring, Noda Tadashi and Yamakuma Nobuo, accompanied by one fisherman, sailed among the islands of the Sakishima Islands to carry out exploration. Finally, they decided to engage in fishery operations around the Senkaku Islands, uninhabited islands lying between Yaeyama Islands and Taiwan."
