There are currently two major black-tailed gull breeding sites in Japan - Kyogashima Island (Cape Hinomisaki, Hikawa County) and Kabushima Island (Aomori Prefecture) - that have been designated as Natural Monuments but the black-tailed gulls at Liancourt (*i.e. Takeshima) are beyond compare with Kyogashima Island. It is said that even most of the black-tailed gulls observed all along the coast of the Japan Sea, as well as on Kyogashima Island, come from Liancourt.
