*Uzan Island (Usando) and Utsuryo Island (Ulleungdo) are also called Buryo (Mureung) or Uryo (Uleung). These two islands are located in the ocean due east of the province. Three lofty peaks stand as if they would reach the sky, but the peak on the south side is not as high. When the weather and wind is good and the sky is clear, you can clearly see some trees around the top of the peaks and coastlines at the foot of them. If the wind is good, you will reach there within two days. It says that Usando and Ulleungdo were originally the same island, and its circumference is approximately 40km.

Content | An official topography compiled in the Kingdom of Chōsen (Joseon) era. It includes the general map of Chōsen (Joseon), "Hachido-sozu (Paldo-chongdo (Map of the Eight Provinces of Korea))" as well as maps of each province. It also includes the description that "When the weather and wind is good and the sky is clear, you can clearly see some trees around the top of the peaks and coastlines at the foot of them (of Uzan Island (Usando) and Utsuryo Island (Ulleungdo))". It states that these two islands were close enough to be visible from the Korean Peninsula. Since Takeshima is not within a visible distance from the Korean peninsula (ca. 217km), this contradicts the South Korean claim that Uzan Island (Usando) is the present-day Takeshima. |
