4 Vietnamese Refugees
(2) Patrol Vessel "Hateruma" Rescued Vietnamese Refugees
In July 30th in 1981, a patrol vessel "Hateruma", which was patrolling the sea area around the Senkaku Islands, found a small sailing boat with 16 Vietnamese refugees who needed to be rescued about at 11:40 near the sea area of Uotsuri Island at 290 degrees 7 nautical miles. The officers of "Hateruma" immediately started the rescue and have every refugee be under the care of "Hateruma" within one hour. As two of those refugees were extremely tired, a crew of "Hateruma" gave medical treatment to them while they were going toward Ishigaki port. They sent all 16 refugees to Ishigaki city after they entered Ishigaki port at 18:30 on the same day.
This is the first case of the rescue of Vietnamese refugees by a patrol vessel.
