Transportation in the Islands
As his business in the islands at last started to take shape, traffic with the main island also became very busy, and he therefore planned to purchase a steamship. In November 1906, he bought the Miura Maru (145 tons) from the The Government-General of Formosa, renamed it the Tatsushima Maru, and started using it for transportation.

Canned fish production
Meanwhile, shoals of fish had been observed to gather in seas near the Islands at all times of year, appearing as if to make it their home. Mr Koga had already hit upon the idea of canning meat from these fish.

Mining for phosphate ores and fertilizer
Mr Koga already knew of the existence of phosphoric acid in the soil of the Islands, and in March 1907, he submitted a mining request to the Fukuoka Mining Supervision Office.
