About Us

The National Museum of Territory and Sovereignty introduces Japanese history and policies on Japanese territory and sovereignty. Our museum was opened in 2018 and moved to the current location in 2020. One of focuses of our exhibitions is the history of the Northern Territories and Takeshima, where Japan cannot exercise a part of its sovereignty in reality. We also special attentions to the Senkaku Islands, indisputably an inherent part of the Japanese territory, where there are no issue of territorial sovereignty but the situations in the waters around the islands have become complex.
The Northern Territories, Takeshima and the Senkaku Islands are inherent territories of Japan, which have never been part of a foreign country.
Our exhibition explains the grounds of the islands’ affiliation to Japan, the claims and actions of other states or a region, and Japan’ s responses and views against them.
