Suisan Bunko Extra Edition / Sea Creatures' Skin Tanning Method

Sea lions (Eumetopias stelleri, Less.) are living in coastal waters of Hokkaido, Karafuto (Sakhalin) and Chishima (the Kurile Islands), and near Takeshima of Shimane Prefecture with their group and breed around May. As the adults cannot be caught easily, the juveniles born around May are normally caught by shooting or clubbing to death around August and September. Skin of juveniles such as these generally amount to about seven to eight tsubo (1 tsubo = ca. 3.3m²) while those of older sea lions make up 50 tsubo or more. Because their body color is dark brown and they cannot be made to look beautiful, the pelts are mostly made into leather.
