Bonito pole-and-line fisheries Until 45 years ago, these fisheries were also operated only as a minor side-business by operators engaged in net fishery for sururu (banded blue sprat), and there was no manufacture of dried bonito flakes. But ever since this industry started in the Kerama Islands, it has spread to all coastal areas.

The most important areas today are Kerama and Motobu Magiri. Each of these has ten or more fishing boats with a total output of more than 20,000 yen, and bonito flakes are the No.1 product in both of these areas.

Other bases for this industry today are Koga Tatsushiro's uninhabited islands, i.e. the Senkaku Islands, Yonaguni and Hatoma Islands in Yaeyama, Miyako, and Kunigami. (part omitted)
As for the allocation of operators and an estimate of their output in the industry this year, there are three boats in the Senkaku Islands with an output of up to 18,000 yen. In outer Yaeyama there are four boats (operators from Itoman, Kakinohana, and other prefectures) with an output of 16,000 yen. And in Miyako there are two boats (Sameshima Kohei) producing 5,600 yen. (part omitted)

In other words, there is no change in the year-on-year growth of these fisheries in our prefecture, and this growth is deserving of particular attention recently. It would appear that the industry is now in the initial stages of development for the future. (part omitted)
