7. Overview
On February 27, 2015, Ms. Eriko Yamatani, then Minister in Charge of Territorial Integrity, made an opening remarks at the open symposium organized by the Japan International Institution of International Affairs (JIIA) on “Postwar Japan’s 70 Years and Proactive Contribution to Peace-Striving for the Rule of Law in the Asia-Pacific Region-.”Former Minister Eriko Yamatani stated that maintaining open and stable seas is indispensable for the stability and prosperity of the Asia Pacific region and stressed the importance of adhering to the “three principles of the rule of law at sea” proposed by Prime Minister Abe. Former Minister Eriko Yamatani also stated that, in order for Japan to spread peace and prosperity throughout the region and the world drawing on our own experiences, the Abe Cabinet is determined to contribute even more to the peace and prosperity of the international community, holding high the banner of “Proactive Contribution to Peace” based on the principle of international cooperation.

Meetings with Foreign Experts

On February 27, 2015, Former Minister Eriko Yamatani met with Dr. Richard Haas, President of the Council on Foreign Relations, and Dr. Kurt Campbell, CEO of the Asia Group (Former United States Assistant Secretary of State), and explained Japan’s position on the situations concerning Japan’s territorial integrity.Former Minister Eriko Yamatani agreed with both Dr. Haas and Dr. Campbell on the importance of adhering to the rule of law at sea for the stability and prosperity of the Asia Pacific region.
